Just Because There’s Metal On The Roof Doesn’t Mean There’s Not A Fire Burnin’ In The #1 Son’s Gullet

Farmer H is raising the roof! In fact, he’s raising it, throwing it in a dumpster, and putting down a different roof in its place. Not Farmer H so much as the roofers he hired to do so. The insurance company reconsidered after Farmer H reasoned that they paid a fortune for hail damage to our automobiles that were parked right beside the house, yet declared no hail damage on the roof. A second insurance adjuster climbed up with the roofer, and agreed that our shingles did indeed have hail damage. So now we’re getting a new roof.

The new roof is quite timely, what with the other one being 17 years old. The #1 son is totally against the green metal roof that we chose to replace the brown speckled shingles that Farmer H originally had put on after telling me we were getting green shingles. The brown ones always clashed just a little with the color of the cedar siding. #1 must think the metal roof will dash the property value of his inheritance. But metal roofs are quite common in Hillmomba. The green looks good with cedar. It will match our green front door, and our green fake shutters.

Thank the Gummi Mary I talked Farmer H out of that orangish-red metal roof.

  1. Whoa! Slow down. Those old shingles could be used for something. I saw that Martha Stewart made some lovely items out of old shingles, dryer lint and aluminum beer cans. Jewelry boxes. A nativity scene. She even fashioned a "frog" for holding her brillo pads out of that stuff.

I hope it's not too late. Throwing away those shingles would be like throwing money down the drain. After all, Christmas is less than a year away... and you might want to craft some gifts for those you love...

  2. Sioux is on to something! I am surprised he is not salvaging the roof for a new out building. A shingle building. Not all of the shingles are damaged, are they?
We put a metal roof on this building. It will probably last longer than me. Ours was a cedar shake roof, original to the building built in the 60's. I may have written about the disposal of those shakes via the infamous dump truck with no brakes .....

  3. Sioux,
Not to worry! The roofers have moved in a dumpster beside the garage! We have our very own dumpster, quite visible from the road, for all to envy. Farmer H can simply pick the treasures out and build a crafting shed for me to while away my retirement hours until he returns to the Mansion.

    Kathy,
I must mention the shingle-saving to Farmer H. If only to see him wring his hands at the thought of losing such a treasure. He could at least build some doghouses or something that might sell at a flea market or auction...
