I Was Thrilled To Win $100 On A Scratcher, Then I Met A Man Who Won More Without Buying A Ticket

Thanksgiving this year fell on our anniversary date. That makes 35 years of matrimony for Mrs. HM and Farmer H. We didn't plan anything special. I had Thanksgiving Dinner to prepare. I got a card for Farmer H, and some scratchers.

While The Pony and I were getting food ready in the kitchen, Farmer H took his scratchers to the living room. We heard him exclaim something about having a winner. The Pony went to investigate.

"Yes. You've won $50."

Farmer H scratches off the prize as soon as he hits a winner, rather than waiting until the end to reveal the prize like I do. When The Pony came back to the kitchen, we heard him exclaim again. Off went The Pony. Back. Another exclamation. And the same scenario again.

By the time he was done, Farmer H had won $200 on a $10 ticket. He would have been happy with the first $50 that he uncovered. He was ecstatic about the $200.

I'm happy for Farmer H. Really. He never wins. This might actually be his biggest win ever.

What's that? You want to know what Farmer H got me for our 35th anniversary? A card. Yes. It's the thought that counts. And I sure didn't want any candy, since I've been cutting back, and we had our Thanksgiving feast looming on the horizon. But Sweet Gummi Mary! Farmer H gave THE PONY a gift! It was a little replica of a U.S. Mail car, like an LLV (Long Life Vehicle), only blue instead of white.

I really didn't expect a gift. But I also did not expect Farmer H to give something to The Pony on our anniversary, and nothing to me!

Thank you! I feel like it's an incredible accomplishment. Especially for Farmer H!

  2. Congrats on 35 years of constantly learning patience! It IS the thought that counts. It will be 50 years for us next month. That should mean that I am more patient than you by 15 years. Unfortunately, I would appear to still be learning. I would be miffed if HeWho gave a gift to one of the children, too. I don't worry about that, since I am the primary gift buyer. He will nudge me when a gift is being open to ask what he gave that person.

    1. Kathy,
You are definitely 15 years more patient than I am! Thanks for understanding my struggle, heh, heh. I would be miffed if Farmer H gave me A STOVE like yours! Not that HeWho could have foreseen what a lemon it would turn out to be. He meant well.

I confronted (don't act shocked) Farmer H about The Pony's gift, and he said, "HM, I have had that for three weeks. I just haven't seen The Pony to give it to him." Well. He sees ME every day! I was perfectly available to present a gift to! AND The Pony's little car was in a GIFT BAG! Somehow that made it worse, though it probably came that way from whoever Farmer H bought it from.

    1. River,
Thanks! Farmer H was thrilled with his winnings. I'm pretty sure he went off bragging to his buddies. The day before, he was full of excitement because he won $15 on a slot-machine thingy that some of the businesses have around here.

  4. Late to the party, as usual, but feelings no less when I wish you a Happy Anniversary. I feel you should get some kind of award for making it through the challenges Hick seems to always be throwing at you, intentional or not. Regardless, marriage is hard work, and you have been working hard for 35 years already. Good luck and best wishes for many more. Ranee

    1. Rae,
Thank you! Living with me is no picnic either. We agree on the most important things in life, but that would be boring(er) to write about.
