We started working just before noon, since a batch of Chex Mix was in order. Not specifically for the Super Bowl, but because we all like Chex Mix, and the majority of my yearly four batches are given away. The Pony was a great stirrer! I put it all together, and then it was in The Pony's hooves, stirring every 15 minutes for two hours. Nothing stuck to the pans! Great job! Of course half of it was packaged up for The Pony to take home.
Our meal-time snacks were nothing elaborate. Mostly storebought stuff that only needed warming. We had quite the variety. Taquitos and Scoops tortilla chips, for which I made a dipping sauce with salsa and Velveeta cheese. Toasted ravioli and mozzarella cheese sticks, with marinara sauce for dipping. Wedge fries with ketchup or ranch dip (which I made with Hidden Valley powder and sour cream). Potato skins, to which I added some extra shredded cheddar. Little sandwiches of turkey and ham on Hawaiian Rolls, with an assortment of cheeses: cheddar, swiss, muenster, pepper jack, provolone. A frozen Bloomin' Onion, though it was called Petals, and was just the battered pieces. And Little Smokies in BBQ sauce, to which I had added some grape jelly for slow simmering.
Dessert was cheesecake, with assorted varieties, pre-sliced. Brownies and donuts, both storebought. The Pony took home half for later consumption.
We all loaded a big cafeteria-style tray. Of course with so much, I could only have one or two of everything. The Pony took a lot home. We will be feasting on sandwiches this week, after Farmer H finishes off the Little Smokies. I'll add one or two of the other sides, but not the entire feast for regular suppers.
The game itself was not very interesting. A bit one-sided, but the team I picked won. I didn't really care, because my dream team (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterbacked by Baker Mayfield, who was a star at OU while The Pony was in school there) was knocked out of the playoffs. No Super Bowl for them! Anyhoo... I picked my team at the opening kickoff, solely based upon my preference for the color of the uniform!
At halftime, we switched to watch the Puppy Bowl. Farmer H has not watched a Super Bowl halftime show since Janet Jackson had her wardrobe malfunction. That might be his criteria. If there's not a chance he might see something titillating, he has no desire to sit through a musical performance. I'm pretty sure this year's artist had nothing Farmer H wanted to see accidentally exposed!
I suppose our next feasting opportunity will be Easter.

This feast sounds like something my MIL would have made. She was also always trying new things and new recipes. She would invite us over and there would be a variety of goodies and usually something new to try. It was always, always so good. She would even make something new and drive over to our townhouse to drop it off. She would just drop it off and leave, never wanting to be imposing.
I know the little smokies are cocktail sausages with some type of sauce, usually a BBQ blend or sometimes wrapped in bacon. However, many moons ago, when I worked as a waitress in our local diner, we used to have smokie sausages, which were about 5 inches long, that were an option for breakfast choices. Those were so good. When I worked the morning shift, I would order smokies and scrambled eggs for my break. Our meals were free, while working, of course. I miss the smokies. We do buy cocktail sausages that are very similar and I sometimes fry them up to go with our breakfast on the weekends. They're close, but still not quite the same thing. Just one of many things that no longer exists and thought would be around forever, because it already had been.
Your feast sounds delicious and a wonderful variety. Lucky Hick - Lucky Pony. Ranee
Rae,
We had a nice variety. I think my favorite was the potato skin, which was just the frozen variety, that came stuffed with a little bacon and sour cream, to which I added extra shredded cheddar before warming.
Speaking of foods which no longer exist... I miss some type of jarred sausage that was kind of spicy. We used to get them at Sam's Club, in a giant jar. When I was working at the unemployment office, I'd drive home for lunch, and have one right out of the jar, with a pack of those neon-orange cheese crackers. Such a great combination! Sam's Club might still have them, but we haven't been there in many years. Not worth a drive to the city and the yearly membership. I've never been able to find them anywhere else. They looked like a regular hot dog, but more grainy, like sausage, with just enough heat to be spice. As Farmer H said, "That's bar food. Like big jars of boiled eggs."
There's a Puppy Bowl?? Your snacks spread sounds delicious, though I would never go to so much trouble. I remember my youngest used to watch the Super Bowl but hasn't for many years now. he does still watch our Australian Football Grand Final, but don't know if he still lays out his charcuterie boards, 2 or 3 depending on how many mates are coming around, bowls of dips with doritos or crackers, giant bowls of chips, the crisps kind that come in foil packets not the hot cooked kind, and a couple of "slabs" of beer. A slab being a box of 24 cans. Anyone coming to share the watching and feasting paid a few $$ towards the cost of the beer. This was all before S and the twins.
River,
Yes, a Puppy Bowl! Puppies playing with a ball on a little striped football field. You might be able to find it online. It's on every year on the day of the Super Bowl. They had it running from mid-morning until after the game. With in-depth looks at the "competitors" before their game. With corny jokes. But still, lots of puppies frolicking.
The Pony actually went to the trouble! I bought the stuff, and planned it, but The Pony was in charge of timing, and the oven. I just simmered the Little Smokies the day before for an hour, so they only needed warming. Your son's football watch party sounds good. "Slabs" of beer, and salty crunchy foods. That's all you need! But I could see how he might be too busy now, with the twins and the boys.
