Bringing Home The Bacon

Roles were reversed here at the Mansion on Tuesday evening, and I ain't talkin' about Sister Schubert's!

When temps were not rising on Tuesday to melt the snow, I stayed home. Farmer H said he'd bring me lottery tickets. YAY! I was happy to relinquish that daily duty to him! I was also happy when Farmer H declared that he would just cook himself some eggs for supper Tuesday evening!

After all, I had brought home the bacon (before Thanksgiving, when I got two smaller packs, but then found the thick-cut kind I use for the roasted vegetables). And also, I had bought another dozen eggs on Monday, and some biscuits, thinking Farmer H might like them with some ham for a supper this week.

Here's the thing. I don't fry eggs. I don't like them that way. I will scramble or boil, but if you want a fried egg around here (or three), you have to do that for yourself. I offered to make the (canned) biscuits for Farmer H, but he said no, he didn't need them. He couldn't decide on ham or bacon. When I said I had two extra packs, he picked bacon.

While I lay down for a late nap, Farmer H fried himself bacon and eggs, and added three Hawaiian rolls to the meal. He was happy. I was happy.

All I had to do was clean up the bacon grease left in the pan before washing it and the egg-encrusted plate and fork. Baby steps...

I like fried eggs, though I'm not a fan of bacon. I love the smell and the taste is okay and I do eat bacon at least once a year, then I get to the cleaning up stage and remember why I don't cook bacon very often. Usually I do scrambled eggs with some grated tasty cheese mixed in and a bit of dried or chopped parsley for colour.

River,
I don't like frying bacon, and mainly use it for laying across the vegetables to add flavor during roasting. Then I use it in my 7 Layer Salad, and the rest for sandwiches. I don't normally have bacon in the Mansion, other than for holiday meals. It does take a lot of cleanup when fried!

We don't have eggs very often. We had them a lot when we had 31 chickens! SO flavorful, compared to store-bought eggs. Now I mainly boil them for salads. I like just some ground black pepper on my scrambled eggs. I crack them into a bowl or cup, and beat them with a fork. They turn out all fluffy that way.

River,
Mission accomplished! I just ordered my hooded sweatshirt, fleeced lining, zip front, deep pockets, in claret red!

Claret Red! I love it already!

River,
Me too! Now I only have to wait 5-7 business days to love it in person.

You can cook the bacon in the oven, but you will not escape the grease unless you have a self cleaning oven. I don't care for fried eggs either. Drew cooks those for himself and can even flip them with a hand motion while in the pan. If he does try to clean up after himself, he NEVER gets it all. If he manages to clean up the stove, you can bet the pan will still be greasy after it has been washed and put away. I put a dash of milk in my eggs with salt and pepper before I scramble them.

Kathy,
The best solution is to drape that bacon on top of carrots, potatoes, and onions in a roaster pan with a lid! That's how I get my bacon! The vegetables get flavor, and the grease in the bottom of the pan is soaked into old bread later for little Jack.

I don't like milk, so that would never happen with my scrambled eggs! But I've seen other people do it.
