Farmer H told The Pony he was grilling steaks on Mother's Day. A couple days later, he told ME. Because I had to procure the steaks, you know. Not a problem. I can pick out steaks for Farmer H and The Pony. Oh, and Farmer H had thoughtfully added, "And whatever you want for yourself."
I decided on pork steaks for myself. I love a good BBQ pork steak. And I knew Farmer H could cook more from the package, and we'd have more meals with our leftover potato salad and deviled eggs. Country Mart had a sale on meats. The pork steaks were $2.68 (heh, heh, I typed that first as $268) per pound. Which was even cheaper than their chicken.
For Farmer H and The Pony, I selected Kansas City Strip steaks. Yes, they were expensive. $10.98 a pound. But still, at $19.54 for the two of them, they were cheaper than the (smaller) 2 for $22 sirloins they had on CasinoPalooza. Plus, I didn't pour hot herbed butter on The Pony's leg!
Those are good-lookin' steaks! Really thick. Which brings me to our irony.
My pork steaks were in a four-pack. They were quite large. I couldn't tell there were four in that package. I thought there might be five. As Farmer H opened them at the cutting block, we were discussing how many to cook. Remember, I wanted enough for at least a meal for the two of us the next day, or maybe the next two days.
"Are you going to cook three of them?"
"I think I'll just do two. They're really big, HM. I don't think you'll want a whole one."
"Yeah, Mom. Most people would only eat half of one of these."
Heh, heh! Did you see the size of those two Kansas City Strip steaks that Farmer H and The Pony each polished off at one sitting, leaving only a bone for the dogs? Let the record show that my half pork steak, while similar in size, was one-third the thickness of those KC Strips.
I'm pretty sure there's irony in those two supercarnivores telling me that a pork steak would be too much meat for a normal person.
Anyhoo... the pictures of the cooked meats are on my not-so-secret blog.

Your strip steaks look like what we call Porterhouse Steaks, I like them, but they're getting too expensive to eat very often. Most of the time now I'll buy mince (ground beef) and make burgers or a meatloaf. Or chuck steak, which is also pricey, but I make a beef casserole and get 6-7 meals out of that with mashed potatoes and other veg to fill the plate.
River,
The price of chicken here is outrageous lately. Also the ground beef. I look for the sales more now than ever. I think our next meal to generate several days of leftovers will be some of Farmer H's auction bacon, cooked with potatoes I didn't use in the potato salad, and baby carrots not used in a broccoli/cheese side dish last week. We love those vegetables, and the bacon is already bought.
I've even made spaghetti (remember that case Farmer H brought home a while back?) with chicken tenders that I can get for a reasonable price at Save A Lot. He even liked it, with mushrooms added to the sauce.
I saw some Ribeyes for $24.99 lb. the other day. No, I did not buy any. Chicken has gone up, too. But I miss the pork prices in Missouri. Pork steak here is 4.98 lb. Nice of them to let you have half a pork steak! Did they let you choose your sides and the amount? After buying the red truck we stopped at a local beer brewery/grill. I had fish and chips and it was delicious! Glad we stopped there. They are dog friendly, and I was happy to meet a Corgi and an Australian Shepard. She was as goofy as my Toni Louise and had the same ears. The Corgi was just 4 months old but walked around with much dignity. We had a great time imagining our dogs romping around there. Toni would have been in heaven, Cujo would have shunned everyone and maybe bitten some. Eddie would have been in his element, accepting compliments on his good looks. We decided that Bo would have been leaping from table to table sampling food. Don't think we would ever take all four. Maybe Toni and Eddie, not the other two!
Kathy,
I don't even look at the steaks unless I see a reasonable sale ad. Yes, so nice to be allowed half a pork steak by the in-Mansion MEAT POLICE! They DID let me choose my sides, though they were already eating while I sliced my onion and grabbed some pickles. That's why their plate pictures showed already-eaten steak, and mine had not yet been touched.
Yes, Toni Louise does seem to share some Australian Shepherd traits. I think my Sweet, Sweet Juno is Lab and Border Collie. I love Corgis! I do think you should take Eddie and Toni Louise out to eat with you, though Toni Louise might benefit from triple-leashing. Cujo will surely have a story to tell about THAT!
Our meat is sold by the kilo, which is 2.2 pounds, so while the prices are high, they seem reasonable when the amount is for 2.2 pounds, not just one pound.
River,
Today I saw an ad for TWO hamburger patties, 6 oz each, for $7. That is not a sale! Even though it is advertised as ground sirloin, it it still hamburger! That would be equivalent to $9.33 a pound. For HAMBURGER!
